This little falcon is easily the hardest raptor in my area of Canada to photograph in flight.
Everything seems stacked against the photographer. Not only does it offer only a quarter of the area aspect of a hawk like the Red-tail, but its flight pattern is not as predictable. Add to that the fact that it gives no hint of taking off from a perch but simply bursts away, and seem always to do so straight away from me. Most of the images I get are of its rear end.
The only successful strategy is one of try, try again. Even with a very low success rate, it is possible to get a couple of recognizable shots every year.
