The Point Abino Lighthouse

Point Abino, which lies west of Fort Erie, Ontario on Lake Erie, is a table of land which has been a hazard to shipping in the area. Initially marked by buoys, it was marked by a Lightship (#82 ) in beginning in 1912, but it was sunk with all on board during a tremendous storm in November, 1913. A Lighthouse was commissioned and the very ornate lighthouse became active in 1918. The Lighthouse had a keeper until it was automated in 1989, and it was de-commissioned in 1995. In 1998 it was declared a National Historic Site.

  2. Fantastic — a Baroque castle on a beach! Far out! I would never in my life expected to see such a sight! Only in America, I guess. Beautiful photo!

  5. Thanks Hilke,

It does seem like a strange place, even more so now that it is deserted

  8. This is actually in Canada. It is a pretty cool site. I haven’t been to the lighthouse itself since 1990, because they have closed it off to the public. In fact, I’m surprised you were able to get shots of it. It’s in need of a serious paint job.
