USS Constitution or "Old Ironsides"

One of the attractions in visiting Boston, Massachusetts is visiting the USS Constitution or “Old Ironsides” It is docked at the Boston harbor and is open to the public year around. Launched in 1797, it is the oldest commissioned ship afloat.

It has had a very long and interesting history, and earned its nickname in the War of 1812 when it was suggested that cannonballs bounced off her sides as if from iron.

“Ilse, a childhood friend of mine, once found a raspberry in the camp and carried it in her pocket all day to present to me that night in a leaf.

Imagine a world in which your entire possession is one raspberry and you give it to a friend.”

Gerda Weissman Klein – Holocaust Survivor

The Holocaust memorial in Boston is a very powerful statement. It is is made up of six pillars representing the six Nazi death camps where six million Jews and 5 million others are estimated to have perished. The pillars are constructed of transparent panels which have 6 million numbers engraved on them, echoing the numbers tattooed on the victims. There are quotations throughout like the one above by Gerda Klein, as well as two large granite blocks at each end.

The memorial was designed by Stanley Saitowitz and was erected in 1995.
