For much of the history of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope has been Italian. Recently of course, he was Polish and currently he is German. For about a 50 year period beginning in 1309, the popes were French, and their residence was in Avignon were a fabulous palace was built on the Rhone River. It is a wonderful place to visit.
