Nature Notes

  1. Can you tell me whether the great tailed grackle is common in northern Utah? There is a flock of birds that hangs out in the parking lot of a grocery store in Salt Lake. Most of them are glossy black (some might be crows) and a few of them are charcoal gray on the back, wings and tail, with russet breast and head.

I’ve never seen russet grackles before, though black ones are common, and seem to flock with starlings.

  2. I don’t think any of the three Grackle species would be expected in Northern Utah. Perhaps Starlings? Google image “European Starling” and see if any of the plumage looks familiar.
