William Chisholm purchased the mill property in 1857 and it has been in the Chisholm family to the present day.

  1. Hello, Harold:

I have just discovered your site while doing family history research online. I’ve noticed an error which I believe you would like to correct.

I was born a Chisholm and raised directly across the road from Chisholm’s Mill, Roslin, Ontario. An existing mill (Shipman’s) was bought by my great-great-grandfather, William Fraser Chisholm, in 1857 and 158 years later it is still in operation, being run by the 6th generation of the Chisholm family.

I was surprised that I couldn’t find the mill in your listing of Hastings County mills. Then I found that you have it filed incorrectly under Prince Edward County. It is actually located on Lots 5 & 6, Concession 9, Tyendinaga Township, Hastings County, where the Shannonville Road crosses the Moira River.

Your pictures of old Ontario Mills are beautiful! Thank you for helping to preserve this important part of our province’s heritage.

    Sincerely,

    Shirley Chisholm Sutherland
