The Biosphere, Montreal

The Biosphere, Montreal

The Biosphere in Montreal was originally built for the 1967 World’s Fair and is based on the geodesic dome and ideas proposed by Buckminster Fuller. It was originally enclosed in an acrylic bubble but this was destroyed when a fire broke out during renovations in 1976. It remained closed until 1990 when Environment Canada began a museum based around issues of water and climate change. This was opened in 1995. The structure has been shown in a number of sci-fi movies such as Battlestar Galactica.

The Biodome, Montreal

The Biodome, Montreal

At least that’s what it looks like to me. It actually started out as a velodrome for Montreal’s 1976 Olympics. It was also used for the judo competitions.

Between 1989 and 1992, renovations took place that transformed it into a nature exhibit housing exhibits of the South American rain forest, North American forest, the estuary habitat of the St. Laurence, and the Arctic and Antarctic. It is known as the Biodome. Unfortunately we never saw the exhibits as the workers were on strike. The overhead shots were taken from the tower of the Olympic Stadium.
