Bass Harbor Head Light, Maine

Bass Harbor lies just outside of Acadia National Park in Maine and at the head of the harbor lies a lovely lighthouse. It was built in 1858 and automated in 1974. There is a short trail from the parking lot which leads to the rocks below the light, and a much photographed view of the lighthouse.

Cape Spear Lighthouse

When the morning sun reaches the continent of North America, it first lights the cliffs of Cape Spear.

The site boasts a pair of lighthouses, the current operating lighthouse, and the original, which is now a museum.

Cape Spear Lighthouse

The original lighthouse was Newfoundland’s first and was erected in 1835, and was active until 1955.The museum is set up to show how the original keeper, James Cantwell would have lived with his family over 150 years ago.

Cape Spear is about 40 minutes drive from Newfoundland’s capital, St. John’s.

Cap Gris Nez, France

In the north of France there are some beautiful headlands including Cap Gris Nez. It is the closest spot to Britain, and on the beautiful day we visited, we were able to see the White Cliffs of Dover across the Channel. There is a lighthouse located here as well.

The Point Abino Lighthouse

Point Abino, which lies west of Fort Erie, Ontario on Lake Erie, is a table of land which has been a hazard to shipping in the area. Initially marked by buoys, it was marked by a Lightship (#82 ) in beginning in 1912, but it was sunk with all on board during a tremendous storm in November, 1913. A Lighthouse was commissioned and the very ornate lighthouse became active in 1918. The Lighthouse had a keeper until it was automated in 1989, and it was de-commissioned in 1995. In 1998 it was declared a National Historic Site.

The Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse

The Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse

The Straits of Mackinac which joins Lake Huron and Lake Superior, has always been a dangerous place for travel. The first lighthouse in the area was built in 1832.  The Mackinac Point Lighthouse was completed in 1890 in an excellent position with a strong light that could be seen for 16 miles. It operated until 1957 when the Mackinac bridge was opened, whose lights made the lighthouse unnecessary.

Point Atkinson Lighthouse, British Columbia

Found in North Vancouver in Lighthouse Park,  Point Atkinson Lighthouse was built in 1910. It replaces a structure that was first put up in 1874. There is a bit of a hike in to the lighthouse but it is well worth it as you traverse some remnant old growth forest.
