Black-capped Petrel, Pterodroma hasitata, is a common species in the gulf stream off of the mid-Atlantic. It breeds on Hispaniola and dispersed north along the U.S. coast and south to Brazil. Its black cap surrounded by a white collar is distinctive, as well as its white upper tail coverts with a dark tail band. It might be confused with the very rare Bermuda Petrel, Pterodromo cahow, which is wholly dark above.
