Smith’s Covered Bridge, Delaware

When Built: 2002

Builders: Delaware Department of Transportation

Description: The original covered bridge at this site was built in 1839 which was destroyed in a fire in 1962 and was rebuilt without a cover. This current bridge has a steel beam and a wooden deck dating to the repairs in 1962 and the covered portion dating to 2002. The stone abutments are from the original 1839 bridge and concrete piers were added in the 1950s. The burr Arches carry no load, which is supported by the steel I-beams.

Description: A nice falls on the Ottawa River in the capital, which is not directly accessible but can be viewed from public property.

GPS Location: N 45° 25.229′ W 75° 43.070′

Rating:

Warning: It can be dangerous to view and photograph waterfalls. The footing can be wet and slippery, and an accidental fall can result in serious injury or death. Note also that many sections of waterfalls are on private property. Please respect these rights.

Description: This bridge is frequently listed as a Burr Arch construction but it is actually Multiple Kingpost. Like many Kentucky covered bridges, it is unpainted and without windows.

Red Canyon is part of the Dixie National Forest and is about nine miles from Bryce Canyon.It is an area of red sandstone spire amongst groves of Ponderosa Pines, and includes an excellent selection of trails.

Description: The Bump Bridge was built by Arnold Graton in 1972 after he examined the previous bridge on this spot and found it could not be rehabilitated due to the deteriorated nature of its timbers.

Builders: Thomas Fisher

Description: It is the only bridge surviving in Ohio with a Warren truss and no arch. It crosses Salt Creek and is sometimes known as Salt Creek Covered Bridge.
