Château de Chenonceau

Château de Chenonceau

A magnificent palace, built over the Cher River, in the Loire Valley, it is sometimes called the Château de Dames because of its association with famous and powerful women.

One of these women was Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of Henry II, who started the wonderful formal gardens. On Henry’s death, his widow, Catherine de’ Medici had her expelled and took over residence.

This colorful history continued. It is currently in private ownership of the Menier family, makers of chocolate.

During the Second World War, the River Cher was a dividing line between Occupied  and Vichy France, and became a stop for those fleeing the Nazi occupation.
