Mesa Arch, Canyonlands, Utah

Away, away, from men and towns,
To the wild wood and the downs,
To the silent wilderness.

– Percy Bysshe Shelley

This section of Canyonlands NP is famous for one of the great landscape icons of the southwest, the mesa Arch. As first light hits the underside of the arch it glows brightly with a wonderful scen shown through the arch including the distant Washerwoman Arch. Another scenic spot is the Green River Outlook especially at sunset.

White-tailed Deer

White-tailed Deer are the most numerous and widespread of the larger North American mammals and they seem to be extending their range.

This buck was on Amherst Island in the early morning. The grass has received a coating of frost from the ice mist coming off the warmer water around the island.

Some details from Maine

Some details from Maine

They are somewhere between the grand landscape vistas of the Grand Canyon, and the tiny macros showing the pollen grains of a flower. I call them midscapes, small scenes showing some of the interesting things that are all around us.

As is often the case with photography, they are done by deciding what best to leave out rather than include.

The images below were taken in Algonquin.
