The world's Largest Globe

Located at the Delorme Map Company outlet in Maine is the world’s largest globe called Eartha. It rotates and is 41.5 feet in diameter. You can view and photograph it on three levels. Just off I-95 near Freeport, and well worth a visit.

Red-tailed Hawk demolishes a vole

This was taken in a high wind from my car, and the original has a lot of movement, almost nausea inducing. I downloaded a trial copy of Adobe After Effects and used a function called stabilize motion, and was very happy with the result.

This involved picking a point in the frame with high contrast that would be stationary throughout. The program then tried to shift subsequent frames to that same point.

Sheffield Covered Bridge, Massachusetts

When Built: 1998 to replace an earlier bridge

Builders: Not known

Description: Unlike some of its neighboring states like Vermont which have a great many surviving Covered Bridge, Massachusetts only has 6 and only a couple older than 50 years.

The original bridge was built in 1854 and was closed to vehicular traffic in 1976. It was destroyed by arson on Aug. 13, 1994 and was replaced in an historically authentic manner in 1998.

This is a 93 foot span crossing the Housatonic River in the town of Sheffield.

Found by the Rail Trail, near the intersection of Mountain Brow Road and Mohawk Road in Hamilton, Ontario

When Built: 1870 (Replaced 1972)

Builders: Unknown

Description: This bridge was due for repairs before it was flooded by Hurricane Irene. The dam above the bridge broke from the effects of flooding due to the storm and washed out the near bank leaving it isolated. The portal you see in the middle of the Green River used to be on the edge of the bank.

Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica

Black-necked Stilt

Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge is an important winter refuge for migrant waterfowl, and has a number of resident wetland species.

Among the birds to be found are Snail Kite, Wood Stork, Jabiru, White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Black-necked Stilt, Anhinga, Muscovy Duck, Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, American Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, and Blue-winged Teal.

The dryer brushy areas may have White-collared Seedeater, Black-throated Wren, and Scaled Pigeon.

It is also one of the few area in Costa Rica where Nicaraguan Grackle has been seen.
