Newfield Covered Bridge, New York

When Built: 1853

Builders: Samuel Hamm and Sons

Description: New York’s oldest covered Bridge still open to vehicle traffic, it is found in the center of the Town of Newfield. It underwent a complete repair by Milton Grafton in 1972 when a Laminated Arch was added to the original Town truss.

Much less common then the white species of Trillium, it is even rarer to find a Red Trillium, Trillium erectum, that is in such excellent shape. It is found in the northeast in North America, extending into the south at higher elevations. Its other common name is the Wakerobin

Description: The most recent renovation of this bridge in 2007 provided barn red sides and white portals, a pleasing combination. The ruins a short way downstream add to the picture. Found near the Town of Salem.

Wild Columbine, Aquilegia canadensis, is one of the most delicate and beautiful of wildflowers. It readily seeds itself and is widespread.

It is a favorite of hummingbirds who feed on its nectar.

I saw these blossoms hanging over a dark canyon and I was reminded of Ansel Adams’ Dogwood Blossoms so I decided to go with Black and White processing.
