The Point Abino Lighthouse

The Point Abino Lighthouse

Point Abino, which lies west of Fort Erie, Ontario on Lake Erie, is a table of land which has been a hazard to shipping in the area. Initially marked by buoys, it was marked by a Lightship (#82 ) in beginning in 1912, but it was sunk with all on board during a tremendous storm in November, 1913. A Lighthouse was commissioned and the very ornate lighthouse became active in 1918. The Lighthouse had a keeper until it was automated in 1989, and it was de-commissioned in 1995. In 1998 it was declared a National Historic Site.

Photographing Diving Ducks

Red-breasted Merganser Diving

Red-breasted Merganser Diving

I was photographing Red-breasted Mergansers recently and decided I would try to get an image of one diving. I cannot give you a good reason for wanting to do such an odd thing but it gave me two quick results

  • I was able to take a lot of picture of splashing water and no duck
  • I realized my reactions sucked

However, after watching them for a few hours, I realized that they often had a “tell”, something that would let me know they were going to dive. Not always, but occasionally they would tense or hunch a bit, before they dived. Most of my attempts were still unsuccessful, but I was able to get a few images. And here they are.

Shelburne Covered Bridge, Vermont

When Built: 1845

Builders: George W. Holmes

Description: Formerly the Cambridge Covered Bridge, it was moved from Waterville to its present location at the Shelburne Museum grounds in 1951. It is a two lane bridge, one of only two in Vermont, the other being Pulpmill Covered Bridge. While you are there, have a look at the Shelburne Round Barn. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to visit the Museum grounds, but it looks like a great place to visit, especially for families
