Great Gray Owl, Strix nebulosa
Great Gray Owl, Strix nebulosa, is a species which periodically winters far south of it’s usual range. This is due to the fact that its food supply, mice and voles, runs short, and they wander in search of it. As they have not had a lot of contact with humans, and because they will hunt during the day, they can become very noticeable and easily approached. The last invasion into southern Ontario was in 2005 and this image was taken at that time.
