Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.-- Max Ehrman

Storm over Hoy

The following series of images were taken from Warbeth Beach on the main island of the Orkneys. We are looking towards the island of Hoy as a furious storm boils up and clears. I walked along the beach and took photos with various foreground elements I thought were interesting

Some various scenes

Marwick Bay

A ships boiler in the foreground and Kitchener's Memorial in the background. Lord Kitchener was British Minister of War in 1916 when his ship, the HMS Hampshire, was sunk off Marwick Head, with the loss of more than 650 sailors. It may have struck a mine.

Marwick Head

Marwich Head is a line of cliffs where a tremendous number of seabirds breed. This was taken from the Bay of Birsay.

The Bay of Skaill

This bay houses an ancient stone settlement called Skara Brae. Built by the Picts and preserved  till a storm uncovered a portion.

Castle of Yesnaby

An isolated stack along the coast of the East Mainland of Orkney, north of the town of Stromness. It is second only to the Old Man of Hoy in Orcadian sea stacks.
