Panama - Chiriqui Highlands March/2008
White-throated Mountain-Gem

The Chiriqui Highlands are situated in Panama near the southern border of Costa Rica. They are the southern portion of the Endemic Bird Area (EBA) called the Costa Rica-Panama Highlands which stretches from just south of the Nicaraguan border in Costa Rica almost to the Panama Canal. It is comprised of mountains and foothills over 1,000 m. in elevation to the highest part of the mountains at 3,800 m. It includes both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes. There are 49 species of birds endemic to this area as well as many subspecies. For a list of these species, please follow this link:

The Pacific coast of the U.S. has a number of excellent Pelagic Tours available. You can see a list of them here . I decided to take a Bird Guides trip from Newport, Oregon, as well as three trips out of the Monterey area with Shearwater Journeys . I also left a few days to look for shorebirds in California and mountain species in Oregon.

One of the prime birding destinations in the United States is the southwest Arizona. It has a host of habitants and picks up birds as the northern portion of the Sierra Madras.
